Diane McClary: Joshua Trees

Video Length: 0 Hour 44 Minutes

The subject of this video was painted in the Joshua Tree National Park, one of the few and decidedly the very best areas to view, enjoy and paint these trees.

We filmed on a breezy day, so scene selection had to take into consideration the direction and speed of the wind.

Diane starts with a black and white study, and provides instruction on how to make that successful and then use it as her primary reference as the light changes while she embarks on the color study.

Plenty of palette shots, discussions at the beginnings and ends of each of the three primary steps to creating a painting, and much more information on color choice, color harmony, color temperature, simplification, and how to lay different values and color temperatures side by side on the canvas to enhance the scene.
