Video Length: 6 Hours 30 Minutes

The most remarkable aspect of Huihan's art is his ability to infuse his painted characters with life and a sense of living history. For this, he is known as one of the pre-eminent narrative painters of this generation. In describing his work this way, I am often asked what makes someone a narrative painter. It is simply that his painting is like a poem or a novel. It tells a story well beyond the moment in time that is captured in the image."

Huihan's people are real, with all the joys and sorrows that accumulate in a human's life. He weaves these themes together in a beautiful tapestry of images that will last eternally. He is dedicated to recording the people of disappearing cultures in their native costumes and at their historical work in the high reaches of the Himalayas.

This video takes you into his studio where he shares the process of developing the storyline of his paintings, showing all the preparatory sketches, drawings, photographs and design elements that he incorporates into a complex painting such as the one with the extended family around the campfire.

Such complex paintings are not executed quickly. The design elements are as essential to the process as the application of paint, so this video is divided between showing how he collects and arranges his resources, as well as the paint application.

Some of Huihan's paintings take a minimum of a month to complete, and the one in this video was completed over a period of five days at the easel. All the important elements are included for your viewing pleasure and understanding, but it was necessarily edited to fit within the allowable time on the DVD format. We wish we could include every brushstroke in the program, but it would take five days to view it, and we believe that you will grasp the essentials of what Huihan has to offer, even with the necessary omissions.

He is a meticulous, perfectionist in his paintings, and this is one of the reasons they are so highly collectible. He builds his paintings with the strength of the pyramids on a foundation that is evident and strong from the first strokes.
