Painting Light and Atmosphere

Here are just a few techniques you will discover:

  • The secret to planning your painting, depending on what the light of the sun is doing...
  • What colors to mix as the sun gets warmer to achieve the appropriate value shifts that make your painting seem real...
  • The most effective techniques for working with reflections and how you can use light to enhance your composition the way the the pros do
  • How to prevent the typical mistakes that beginner and intermediate painters make so you can see faster results on the canvas

Here Are Some Other Techniques You'll Discover

  • Learn how Joe uses a drawing technique typically used for figurative work to help you lay your forms out in the correct way and dramatically improve your proportions and drawing
  • How to use the palette knife as a "chaos instrument" to make your painting look more natural and less deliberate
  • How to create texture without losing your sense of form
  • How to capture both the subtle and not-so-subtle ways that foliage interacts with the rest of the landscape
  • How to take your outdoor painting and improve the compositional design in the studio

Sound difficult? It's not!

Joe creates a demo fully en plein air and then takes that study into the studio to build a studio painting, complete with layers of glazing.

You can paint along with this step-by-step painting tutorial to learn how to paint a breathtaking landscape scene using Joe's most powerful painting techniques — the techniques he has developed over decades of painting.

It's time for Joseph McGurl to pass down his techniques from master to apprentice.

You'd be surprised at the number of established professional painters who turn to McGurl for instruction to take their already high-quality work to the highest levels.

He will show how to use information gathered on location and apply it to a large studio piece. His plein air study technique is unique and uses tools that will help make your drawing almost perfect.

You don't need to be an experienced painter to learn how to do this.

And you don't have to have talent to paint. That comes from training.

In fact, in the words of our publisher, B. Eric Rhoads, if you can follow a recipe and bake a cake, you can learn to paint. Because painting is a process.

This training is right for you if:

  • You love the idea of creating stunning landscape paintings
  • You want to understand the techniques that make Joe McGurl one of the most sought-after and collectable painters in America
  • You're a beginner, intermediate, or even professional painter and you want to improve your technique significantly

If any of the above apply to you, then we encourage you to place your order now.

Advanced Landscape Painting

Here’s just some of what Joe covers in Advanced Landscape Painting

  • How to do an on-location outdoor “plein air” painting
  • How to upsize a small painting to a massive studio painting
  • How to create a proper underpainting
  • How to build up a painting, and where and when to use texture
  • How to use thin, subtle layers to give the painting depth and mood
  • How to paint realistic-looking trees and foliage
  • How to paint shimmering, lifelike water
  • How to paint the sky at dusk, right after sunset, to capture the subtle nuances of color
  • How to tie it all together in a composition that works

Joseph’s landscape paintings are among the most highly regarded in the world and are sought out by collectors and museums alike because of their beauty and importance.

In spite of his fame and preeminence, Joseph remains humble and modest about his work. He equates himself to a novelist, one who is writing fiction based on fact. Never shy about exaggerating the details of a scene to convince a viewer, he knows exactly how to make every element appear as if it’s just the way nature offered it up … only better.

This is a RARE chance to study under one of the great landscape painters alive today.

Visiting Joseph McGurl’s studio is one of the experiences any artist would cherish, but to sit back and watch the inner workings of the processes, techniques, and philosophies of master artist Joseph McGurl is a rare opportunity that any artist would jump at the chance to experience and this video gives you that chance!

Along with Joseph’s extensive instruction, the video also includes a gallery of some of his work, a tour of his studio, and an interview conducted by magazine publisher, Eric Rhoads.

Becoming an advanced painter is the most effective way to get high prices and build a reputation as a prominent painter. And now you have the opportunity to advance your skills with award-winning artist Joseph McGurl.

Just imagine how becoming an advanced landscape painter could transform your life!

Joe completes this demo with oil paints, but acrylics can work as well-- use a retarding medium when adding texture to the water and when applying the glazes to be able to apply them before the acrylic dries.
