JUNE, the second installment in the four part landscape instruction series, features two painting instruction sessions beginning with a very intense morning session of bright outdoor painting from life.

In this video, Richard Schmid demonstrates his plein air painting techniques, capturing a summer scene at his former home in Brattleboro, Vermont. Beginning with a rough sketch, then blocking in major shapes and values to establish the composition and layout, Watch Richard gradually build up layers of paint, from broad strokes to finer details. Richard demonstrates his method of mixing colors on the palette to achieve accurate tones and subtly applies those to the canvas to mimic the effects of natural light. Final touches include refining the details, focusing on the texture and depth of the landscape elements, foliage, flowers, and the fabrics flowing in the June breeze.

The second painting session brings the viewer into Richard's studio with an aesthetic and technical analysis of the morning's work, which soon develops into a fascinating tour de force of palette knife and transparent wash painting combined. Richard also delves into the important use of color charts, the use of interesting straight lines, capturing the drama of color, the focal point, and much more.
