Meet Your Instructor, Chien Chung-Wei(AWS, D.F.)

Chien is the first artist in Taiwan to become a Signature Member of the American Watercolor Society and the National Watercolor Society. He has also achieved the prestigious position of Dolphin Fellow with the AWS.

He’s the author of the bestselling books “The Intrigue of Form” and “Learning Watercolor from Demonstrations.”

Artists and collectors say the watercolor works of Chien appear to embrace the spirit and character of Western watercolor masters over the last two centuries.

His works are delicate and classic, reminiscent of the works of William Henry Hunt and Myles Birket Foster.

You can see the spirits of such great watercolor masters as Thomas Girtin, John Sell Cotman, J.M.W. Turner, Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, and Edward Seago in his works.

He has also broken the boundary between watercolors and oil paints. He created a series of works using watercolors and gouache that look like Romantic oil paintings of the 19th century.

Those works totally changed the conventional impression of watercolors.

His colors are expressive and classic, laid down with masterful brushstrokes that endow every character with a rich fullness.

He creates the beauty and intrigue of form even with ordinary subjects — and that’s the enchantment of his watercolors.

Today, you get the chance to learn from this amazing artist and discover new skills that will propel your art to an entirely different level.

Fans around the world describe Chien Chung-Wei’s work as reminiscent of William Henry Hunt and Myles Birket Foster.

Discover exactly how he does it, apply his techniques today, and see an almost-immediate improvement in your art!

CHEIN CHUNG WEI: SPONTANEOUS WATERCOLOR

Great video. Dubbing did not bother me because you are witnessing the painting of a wonderful piece of art. You almost do not need audio.

Chein Chung Wei impressive

A great video that taught me much more than I Knew. Maybe even more if I could speak mandarin but the voice over was bearable.

Awesome

I really enjoyed this video and was immediately able to put his techniques to use in my own paintings, with good results. While this video is more of a masterclass for competent painters, there is plenty that people at any stage of their painting journey can use. And it's simply very inspiring to watch Chien Chung Wei work his magic. The translation is well done, as is the voiceover, which sounds natural and professional.

Spontaneous Watercolor

I've seen other videos of Chien painting and even though his English is very broken I prefer that to the translation. But the detail provided from his sketch and his reasoning behind it is excellent. That, and the actual painting process step by step is a great inspiration for personal improvement in my own journey. Nobody paints watercolor quite like him. I'll never achieve his prowess but a nugget here and there is priceless. Recommend it to all artists for an inside perspective.

That's why Chien is one of the best contemporary watercolorists

Chien is an inspiring watercolor artist with his unique contemporary techniques , combining traits from Oil painting, flowing Chinese brush painting style and detailed classical sketching techniques . Simple but very effective use of basic colour palette, but very expressive. He is also a Great teacher, systematic and methodical. Gives insight both in details and big picture-wise.
My issue with the video is more the technical side - how do I get the original Chinese l commentary from Chien himself? Mine only comes in English. And it is not possible to pause midway during the demonstration.
